'Big Ideas'

The inaugural International Drawing Project, organised by Craig Atkinson of Café Royal Books, is a series of events aiming to demonstrate the diversity and importance of drawing.

Amongst the events is an exhibition, which will be approached in a similar way to publishing - the gallery beginning as an empty space to slowly be filled by drawings. Visitors will be able to select work from the walls to re-print on a photocopier and bind into a catalogue before leaving the gallery.

I will have some *all-new* drawings in the show. 'Big Country' is a series based on the roadside 'Big Things' of Australia (including giant fruit, crustaceans and Van Gogh paintings(!) Some are up in the Portfolio already..)

The exhibition and associated events run 14th Feb - 1st March at PR1 Gallery, Preston, UK.

Fairytale of New Work

Just finished work on a new one-page comic strip with my pal and long-time collaborator, P M Buchan.

Esben & The Witch is a spin on the classic Danish fairytale and a moral warning against judging the peccadilloes of others, set against a backdrop of murder, transvestism and cannibalism! (Par for the course really with Buchan!)

The strip will appear in the next issue of Scream Magazine in the UK, published early Feb.

Art of Zines, San Jose, CA

A couple of Phil's comix (including A G'Day In The Life, above) will feature in the upcoming exhibition, Art of Zines 2011 at Anno Domini in San Jose, California. The show opens this Friday, 3rd June, and runs until the 18th.

Made For Japan

This Saturday, 14th May, Liverpool's CUC on Greenland St will host Smiles For Japan, a fundraiser for the British Red Cross Japan Tsunami Appeal.

There will be tons of stalls and events on the day, including Made For Japan, an art sale featuring prints, books, zines and craft objects by UK artists, including a new re-print of Phil's mini-comic, What Were You Doing When The Disaster Struck?

An Illustrated History of Graphic Novels (detail), 2010

Phillip has teamed up with writer James McMahon to create an exclusive four page comic-strip article for this week's Shortlist magazine in the UK. An Illustrated History of Graphic Novels looks at the development of the medium and its wider cultural significance (especially for Hollywood). The magazine is available for free in numerous outlets including train stations around the country until the end of the week, and is available to view online by clicking here (and flipping to p52)

Holly's exceptional depiction of her favourite type of meat - Walking Beef (above) - earned her 1st place in the competition. Her prize includes an original painting by Phil, of his favourite meat, steak! (below)

Go Penguins launched this week in Liverpool. The public art event features over 100 penguins, created by artists, schools and community groups, on a trail around the city. Phillip has created two penguins, Sailor Gerry and the Very Important Pete Price Penguin. They can be found at the Capital Building on Old Hall St, and the Metquarter shopping centre on Whitechapel, respectively. Until 10th January 2010.

Phil will be leading a one-day print workshop at the Bluecoat print studio in Liverpool this November, to coincide with the exhibition Under the Volcano.

'...Here he explores your macabre side and the work of Mexican engraver/social commentator José Posada whilst introducing the quick and easy art of making black and white prints from drypoint paper plates, Perspex and aluminium. Come and have a go if you think you're dark enough!'

Solo show

True Stories by P.M. is a retrospective exhibition of Phil's comic book works since 2004, running from 12th September - 28th November at Riverside Gallery in Richmond upon Thames. (More info here)

The private view is on Monday 14th September, from 6.30-8.00pm.

The exhibition will also see the launch of a new comic book of the same name, collecting the sporadic True Stories strips from the last five years, along with a smattering of new ones!

Fanzine E.P.

Phil is collaborating with Liverpool band Slopes to produce the packaging for their new E.P. 'Fanzine' to be released later this month.

The packaging will take the form of an actual zine, complete with interviews, photos, comix and 4 track CD.

The launch party and gig is at St. Bride's Church in Liverpool on Saturday 22nd August at 7.30pm. Sound.

One & Other

As well as being in London for the Sense art fair next weekend (see below), Phil will also be appearing on the fourth plinth at Trafalgar Square next Friday 24th July, from 8-9pm as part of Antony Gormley's One & Other(!)

Apart from wondering what the hell he is doing and deeply, deeply regretting it, he will probably be making a series of drawings/flyers and posting them out to the crowd as paper aeroplanes!

Sense Art Fair

Phillip is currently collaborating with Italian photographer Giorgia Cavicchia to produce new work for Retold as part of Liverpool Biennial. Their piece, Beware Of The Risen People will combine drawing and photography, (and zombies!) and will feature alongside other artists who have worked as volunteers at the International Festival of Contemporary Art this Autumn. Phillip was commissioned to create three 'Superlambananas' for the public art event Go Superlambananas in Liverpool this month. As part of the city's European Capital of Culture celebrations, over 100 replicas of Taro Chiezo's iconic SuperLambBanana are appearing around the region.
